The safest way for a baby to sleep in a crib

To have your baby sleep in the crib safely, you should put some safety measures in place. The position you place your baby in is very important.

The Best Position

Placing your baby safely in the crib can protect him from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).  Important pointers when you place your baby in the crib:

  • Place him on his back over a flat, firm surface.
  • Do not share the crib.  Place him in his own crib by himself. If you have twins, make sure each one has their own crib or bassinet.

The Safest Place

The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a crib or bassinet.  If you have multiple babies, each one should sleep in their own crib.  Keep the following tips in mind:

  • Make sure that the crib meets safety standards.  Don't try to fix a crib that is broken or has missing parts.  Don't use cribs with drop-down rails.
  • Do not let your baby sleep in his car seat, carrier, or stroller as he might suffocate in those.  If he falls asleep in one, transport him to his crib as soon as possible.
  • Keep objects away from your baby's crib.  Your child could accidentally hurt or choke himself with a toy, a crib bumper, or some loose bedding.
  • Remove any hanging threads from the crib.  Babies can tangle in them and choke.

The Correct Position

At least until the baby is age 1, you should always put him to sleep on his back.  It is not safe for a baby to sleep on his side or tummy.  If he rolls from his back to the side and on his tummy, do not worry about it.  Some other pointers to keep in mind are:

  • Dress your baby in light clothes and avoid cloth with strings or straps.
  • Special products that claim to prevent SIDS do not really have proof of that.  Avoid purchasing them.
  • If it makes you feel safe, place a camera monitor to keep track of your sleeping baby.
